Welcome to Book Worms Are Real, we are a website set up for children to be part of a book club, with a difference, hoping to make a difference.
Our members are children aged 5-16 and become part of the club by joining via their school.
There is no cost for your membership, you can be as involved as you like, or perhaps just dip in and out, however you wish.
Becoming a member gains you access to a range of beautiful books to borrow, take home, read, or be read to, enjoy, review it and return it…for another. This is a limitless offering. We are sort of like a library, without the restricted opening hours, or need to be accompanied by a parent.
Twice a month, pre-loved books will be dropped at your school and given to your form teacher to distribute/make available.
The end goal
To provide children with an inclusive, safe, inexpensive way to become part of a club that will hopefully instil a love of reading and all things books, to an audience saturated with computers, gaming devices and mobile phones. To strip it back and keep it simple, you can take a book anywhere, no charging required, no internet required, no supervision required.
The book club aims to provide children with a constantly refreshed reading list and the opportunity to read books for pleasure.
Even if a child does not have a parent who is able to contribute by donating a pre loved book, we desperately do not want any child wishing to engage to miss out, in fact we especially want to reach those children.
I am fortunate to have a relationship and love of books, which happily I have seen passed on to our 5 year old Son, Earl. We have such a hoot riffling through the charity shops offering and unlike with toys, or sweet treats I try not to limit his selection, in order to encourage reading. It is an investment buying books as Earl can read and re-read the special ones and donate back the ones worthy of just one read.
Some of our most favourite books have been pre-loved and are no longer in print/published. I would never have come across those books had we not have embarked on our village trips to the charity shop, then those stories would never have been told…..and they are far too funny, heart-warming and special to have been left for the bookworms to munch on.
By donating just one book, via a charity shop purchase, you have donated to charity, shared a book with your child’s class, neighbouring schools and schools even further afield as the book continues its journey. So that one book donation reaches so many different children.
Earl’s favourite reads are those I saved from when I was a little girl, making them all the more special as they take me right back to those nights when my Mum would read them to me, in my bedroom covered in Care Bear wallpaper and with a soft pink matching lampshade. The stories and the moments we shared, that I continue to share with Earl, and hopefully then our younger Son, Eden, are magical and cherished. Without books they would not be in the memory bank at all. They really are the gift/donation which keeps on giving.
